The day I met Beedle the Bard...

I am so excited to have in my hands the newest edition of JK Rowling’s Tales of Beedle the Bard, beautifully, and dare I say, magically illustrated by Chris Riddell.

I met Chris Riddell a year ago at an event in Haworth, and I asked him about the rumours he was illustrating the Tales. He took out an A4 sheet of paper and gave me a sneak peek of The Bard himself!! My dear friend Esther can lay testament to the fact I actually SQUEALED!

This edition of Tales of Beedle the Bard is just glorious. A must have for the Potterheads out there, but more than that…a must for lovers of magical tales, brought to life in ethereal and other worldy illustrations by the master of visual story telling Chris Riddell.

Women Who...Wrote Their Own Stories

In our exclusive Women in Literature series, artist Kirsty Maclennan was commissioned by the Crow Emporium to inspire women and men young and old all over the world by capturing the great literary heroines of our time. It is a timely reminder of the value of such depth and talent these writers had, the challenges they overcame as women, in different challenging life circumstances, and the value in looking at these women as heroines even though they lie beyond the gaze of the mirror and the mobile screen.

We want this poster to capture the imagination of all literary lovers as well sit proudly next to the disney princesses in our kids bedrooms. To remind us of the great courage, talent and different ways we can all aspire to make our dreams a living reality, no matter who we are, what our circumstances, what we look like or where we live. Literature, books, education will help demolish resistance to your dreams.

Available now as an A3 Poster and in beautiful large sized Luxe Postcards, which look (and feel) unlike anything else. They’re uncoated and naturally textured, so you can write personal messages on them. They’re also remarkably thick, high quality and have a classic, pared back look. And if that’s not enough attention-grabbing power for you, every one of our Luxe Postcard has an ocean blue coloured seam running through the middle.

Coming soon as a teatowel and totebag!

Literarily yours, Tish

Kirsty Maclennan - Artist Bio

I grew up in Gateshead, a stone’s throw away from the vibrant city-centre of Newcastle.

I owe my ability to draw to my grandfather, who let me riffle through his extensive Reader’s Digest library, filled with world history and astronomy and poetry. It is here that I found the ‘How to Draw’ manual, a large dry volume, filled with painstaking step by step guides, to drawing everything from sleeping cats to space rockets. With this stately tome by my side, I sat in my grandparents’ frontroom each day after school and learned to draw the world.

I decided to sacrifice one love for another when picking my degree, and studied English Literature at Northumbria University. In between assignment deadlines and reading lists, it was my secret pleasure to rise early on Sundays, make a good strong pot of coffee, fill my room with music and dedicate the morning to painting sea-blue canvases.

I am inspired by many things: trees and wind and rain, lost afternoons wandering around any gallery I happen upon, and by the words and lives of great writers. I have read for as long as I have been able to draw, and words seem to flow into my artwork of their own accord.

By way of Grasmere, Liverpool, a definitively inclusive tour of  West Yorkshire, and too many jobs to mention, I find myself in the beautiful town of York, with a man, a tortoise and a studio filled with light.

Literary News

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Dear Literary Friends,

1 January marked the 200th anniversary of the publishing by Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor & Jones of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Written by Mary Shelley when she was just eighteen years old, it is an incredible example of romantic gothic horror and some even claim it was one of the first science fiction books.  The story which came to Mary in a dream, captured the world of young scientist Victor Frankenstein and his damning choices which led him to create 'the monster'.

We celebrate the incredibly talented Mary with our Women in Literature series by UK artist Kirsty Maclennan.

"My dreams were all my own; I accounted to nobody; they were my refuge...my dearest pleasure." - Mary Shelley
